The 2016 Mt Fuji earthquake was a powerful earthquake that shook Mt Fuji before its major eruption began. The earthquake was preceded by 15 foreshocks, the lowest at magnitude 4.8, and the highest at 7.4 several days before the main shockwave hit. Following the earthquake, 277 aftershocks occurred, of which 27 were above magnitude 6, 9 of these being above magnitude 7, which further added to the hysteria caused by the main earthquake as a result.
